My neighbor found a couple of roaches in her dishwasher over the past few days. We're in SC, hot and humid weather, so roaches are like a plague here but we can manage them. But finding them in the dishwasher?? She never leaves its door open so that really worries her to know they can get inside anyway...
She doesn't know what to do to get rid of them, and neither do we! Especially since she can't use any type of insecticide or have pest control coming to her place due to health concerns (needs to keep germs at bay because of very low immune system and other things).
Boric acid powder. Boron is a naturally occurring element. It shouldn't affect an immune system when use as a surface dust in hidden places. Actually, the roaches are more likely to create health problems. If she has ever used a borax laundry booster, she's been around boron in similar concentrations.
Roaches seek hot and wet conditions. Dishwasher, electrical outlets and switches, water heaters, any area that gets slightly warmer than the rest of the place.
The roaches are getting around the seals in the dishwasher or less likely coming through the drain.
The front control panel area can be a hot spot for them, as well as the motor area underneath.
The other treatment that may be needed is a pyrethrum spray. Bengal has a red spray can of pyrethrum, which is related to the chemicals in marigolds.
I've used the combination successfully on some amazingly bad infestations, but it involved taking off switch plates, opening up water heater casings, and so on. The idea of not allowing an exterminator in is silly. As long as she supplies those two things and he agrees to leave his stuff in the truck, he should be able to do a fine job. She will want to have him do the boric acid dusting first, then back his way out while using the spray. If she stays one room ahead of him and then they both exit and she sits outside for an hour any residual should be settled and the air fine.
roaches are attracted to electrical sources like computer boards in a dishwasher.they also need water so the d/w serves 2 purposes.. ive worked on many dishwashers in "clean" houses only to find roaches in them....
