Hi Everyone,

Been considering on buying a house near a Whiskey Distillery. My main concerns are health. There this thing called Whiskey Fungus (Mold that develops outside the homes facades) caused by the Whiskey Distillery, which have been claimed harmless, but I am more concerned about the ethanol gas (Angel's Share) being released by the aging whiskey into the air and this neighborhood. The houses around this area are known to have this Whiskey Fungus that looks like soot. I don't care for the maintenance of it, nor the nuisance of it either... as a good power washer should take it out, I am just concerned about any health concerns for my wife and the children. Is this the right part of the forum to post this?

Thank you again

The huge bakeries used to give off a lot more alcohol to the air, I think. The mold would give me pause more than the alcohol anyway, and honestly would probably make me pass. That is said even though I find asbestos and Radon issues to be wildly overblown. Mold is much more tricky, especially with kids.

What's the discount compared to if the house were not close to the whiskey plant?

I love the way distilleries smell. I have visited Marker's Mark several times, always thinking how nice it would be to live close enough to smell it.

This area is priced high due to it being a nice area in town. The house needs some work, but its a great deal.

The distillery hires a power washing company to wash everyone's houses every 2 years or so.

Areas around aren't as good in my opinion, and more money and not the same quality of a house. Cheaper taxes too.

So great price, great area, great home... its just these Distilleries and the Mold / Ethanol that I am hung up about.

Can you fix up a pipeline into your house?

Seriously, as much as I enjoy a good whiskey, the aroma on a daily basis would probably get to me after awhile.

Default Surprised the EPA is not involved...

There is a well known chocolate factory west of the Chicago's Loop that has been on the "chopping block" due to EPA regs -- Chicago's Chocolate War - TIME I am shocked that a similar effort to get the distillery to "clean up their act" has not eliminated any emmisions.

I would talk to experinced local real estate agents and ask them how often the negatives of the plant kill deals vs how many folks tend to like the area and are OK (enjoy ??) the aroma...

Well we decided to pass on this opportunity... kind of bummed at the moment. It was the perfect house.

Wise decision. You have the side benefit at this point of dulling that "gotta have THIS one at all costs" feeling that makes many people overpay.

Update to this issue:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/30/us...=MYWAY&ei=5065

As for the outgassing in the storage barns? Honestly, after the initial investment, the reclamation could probably pay for itself with a little good marketing. "Want to partake of the 'angel's share?'" now you can. Jock Daniels Angelfire Whiskey, now on sale. Companies can be SO stupid...
