So, I was driving around one day and happened by this old abandoned house. I drove by intrigued by its architecture (I assume Craftsman). One day I parked and walked up to the front porch. It was so large and it felt like an outdoor room! Even the ceilings on the porch are tall. I can imagine here in the south folks gathered on the porch in those days before AC. There is a huge fireplace in the kitchen though I didn't catch a pic of it. Inside the house has been gutted but work has been still for a while I think. It's not in a very good neighborhood and the cost to completely rehab the house is probably prohibitive. Anyway, I wanted to share this. Anyone else felt the same way about an old house?
I wished it was here and not there, I'd be a player for it at the right price. There's a major movement back to the old areas here and we have a lot of the old Craftsmen type houses just south of downtown San Antonio. It's not a good area either because of the low income folks that live there and the crime it brings from the few. But South Town is having a major revival and soon these homes will be worth several hundred grand. I've been looking in this area for good houses to remodel and rent, hopeful of the returns when the area is worth a lot more $$$$$. This particular house has a lot of character. What's not to love about it?
My girls are also living in the old areas where they live-Charleston and Knoxville. Both have bought in the last 2 years only to see the values over double since they bought. The one in Charleston bought into a 2 story 1865 in the downtown area and the value has gone thru the roof into the 7 figure range. Amazing what these old houses are going for these days. But they've also spent some big money on the restoration of it. Fortunately, I've been able to send them 100 year old fixtures that they've had reworked so it's period correct. I guess saving all the crap from the old remodels decades ago was worth while.
Might wanna reconsider if you think the area is going to see revitalization. NOW is the time to get in the market while interest is cheap as well as prices. LOVE the old houses!
I don't intend to buy it as I'm currently not working. The neighborhoods surrounding this house are going downhill a bit. In addition the house is in an economically depressed area and there is currently a glut of homes for sale. I wish things were different.
That is one great house and yes, it is a craftsman. It's a beauty!
Have I ever felt this way about a house? You bet! Once a week at least I see an older home that steals my heart!
I absolutely love older homes and the craftsman / arts and crafts style is one of my favorites. In fact, my next home is one!
As you pointed out, many craftsman and other older homes are located in the inner cities of neighborhoods that are not the best. There are some older homes to be found in inner ring suburbs, and it is my hope that this trend of reclaiming older homes continues!
It has lovely bones. You would have a real charmer w/ some TLC. Love the wildness of the back, you can really take advantage of that and make a beauty out of it. Nice finding a diamond in the rough...
