Get some estimates and then take the neighbor to small claims court. You will need a witness to his cutting down the tree with it falling into your house.
You may just have a cultural misunderstanding.

That's what I was thinking! If it were me, there is no way would let him anywhere near my house. Don't waste anymore time: document the damage, make a claim with your homeowner's insurance company, and let them go after him.

I agree with these posters that you should contact your insurance company immediately. They will deal with your neighbor's insurance company. I can't imagine why you'd let this go a year unless perhaps you don't have a homeowners policy?
You probably have secondary damage after a year of water getting into that hole. Who knows how rotted or molded inside that wall is. You can't just cover up the hole. So get a pro to work out the repair plan and let insurance deal with it.
