I like grey and that first photo is lovely. I would not do grey floors. Do wood or maybe even slate. The second photo, I agree, too industrial looking.

I have been trying to get a gray for my cabinets and they all look blue! What is the color of the first one with the wood floor. That's the color! HELP

The trick is to get a gray that has undertones that look neutral with the light in your home. That means getting samples of the paint, covering a large enough area like a poster board with it, and then deciding in your own home which one looks correct. That takes a few days or changing light / overcast / full sun.

Frankly too many folks forget that grey does not reflect as much light as white cabinets and end up with a kitchen that then needs much more lighting to make things as easy to see as they were with white cabinets. The sexy photos you see in magazines or online probably have more studio lights than a full shooting season for Vogue and get all the digital tweaks too.

Much easier to go with white or, heaven forbid, actual stain on natural wood grain ...

"Iron Mountain" gray by Benjamin Moore is pretty nice (pictures below). We used "Rockport Gray", and I wish they were a tad bit darker because we have a lot of light coming in.

I realized I never updated this thread after I asked for advice. Years from now, we're going to get new cabinets installed that actually have some design to them, but for now, we painted them. We are really happy with the floor. It has a little bit of texture to it so the dog isn't sliding around, and the color matches the new backsplash I installed. There are also new light fixtures, new cabinet hardware, new pulldown faucet, and we have a dining room set.

Here is the BEFORE picture:

And here is the AFTER picture:
