I received a quote for a standard white cedar privacy fence, up to 6' tall. It was $36 a linear foot. I think this is a ridiculously high estimate. The area is flat, nothing in the way, easily accessible, etc. Actually they could park right next to fence line, even, so there's no hauling of material or equipment.
Anyone had a fence installed or quoted recently? Is $36 a foot way out of line?
For new construction here, meaning no removal of an old fence, it's $35.00 a foot. That'll get you white wood pickets on a treated 2 rail lumber frame and posts set in concrete 18" deep at 8 foot centers. Basket weave is the same price with the same species of materials.
I think it could also be the cost to paint them white.
At Home Depot (retail price), it is 2.38 per board. So, you are looking about 5 dollars per foot, not including paint, prep-work for paint, screws, labor, tool maintenance, etc.
If you have any building skills, have a company install only the fence posts and do the rest yourself. The fence posts are the only back-breaking part, and you will save a ton of money. A drill or nail gun will make it fairly easy. I've helped people build a few 6' fences.
I've seen some people build a fence and leave a 1" gap between two boards and install hinges there for a gate. Then they cut the cross members a few feet down to make the gate mobile instead of it being a fence segment. That's pretty genius.
