I have an older door - let me rephrase - A REAL old door. The hardware is basically falling off and is really old. How do I go about changing it? handle, internal lock, etc?
That's a mortise lockset with a combination deadbolt.
They are still readily available, if you actually need to replace the case (the part that is actually "in" the door). Very rarely do cases actually break- they can usually be cleaned/rebuilt.
Handles/knobs are more likely to break/fall off. Threads strip and set screws fall out.
If I had to guess, I'd say its a Baldwin mortise lock. If you go to their website you may find a replacement. Measuring the case involves a lot of different dimensions- the case itself, the backset of the cylinder and knob, distance c/c of cylinder and knob, mounting screws.
When you pull the case examine it well- look for markings of manufacturer, model number, etc. that may help identify your case- if you speak to someone locally that has replacement cases.
Also, keep in mind that they can sometimes be repaired for less than the cost of a new one.
the knob side has those screw in posts that goes into the case, then the knob fits over that with set screws. My wife hates it and it falls off every other month. I have already replaced the screwed posts once. Just want to get a whole new one. I don't care if the case stays but want a new knob and front handle with deadbolt. so to get a replacement I have to get exact measurements as described above? the lockset is probably 40 years old or older
If everything works on it, I wouldn't replace it. If the knob threads on properly and you tighten the set screw onto a flat side of the shaft, there is no reason at all that it should fall off.
Make sure when you are tightening the screw that the knob is "snug" but not so tight that it turns hard and that the set screw is lined up with a flat side of the shaft. Check where the flat sides are before you turn the knob on so you can line things up properly.
I have to screw on the knob - it is hard to tell once it gets screwed in where it aligns so I can screw in the set screws. Is it possible to get a new spindle, deadbolt, front handle, and door know and just repair the case? Is there a certain fittiment I need for the front handle? I am guessing the spindle is a special order part for this age of front door? and lastly same with the knob?
Also, all the rest of my exterior doors are keyed alike - However this front door has a different key? Is it costly to rekey the deadbolt so it matches the rest of my exterior doors?
