I've never bought a new mattress in my lifetime. The wife and I are looking to buy a king sized bed to replace our hand me down queen. I like the idea of building my own platform frame, but I'm wondering what the difference in feel is between a platform and a foundation?

Anyone have a platform? Love it or hate it?

Also, what kind of mattress do you have? I'll probably go with standard innerspring, but how are the memory foam ones?

I prefer platform. No boxspring needed. Also, I like a firm bed.

I currently have this foam mattress - Spa Sensations 8" Memory Foam Mattress, Multiple Sizes - Walmart.com - going on its 4th year, and still very comfortable. It will, I am sure, need replacing in the next 2 or 3 years.

I've come to prefer the foam, as opposed to an innerspring/boxspring combo. However, there's no denying that a good innerspring will last longer than the foam one I have. Dunno about the really expensive memory foam mattresses, they are out of my reach.

We have a bed frame, as a platform is too firm for my husband.
We have innerspring, as foam is too warm for me.

Both beds here are platform - I like firmer as well (unfortunately, the newest mattress didn't live up to expectations - I HATE the new mattresses - I want and old fashioned one w/o pillow-top, both sides are a real mattress and can be flipped AND rotated.

Platform beds are generally pretty low. Would it be a problem?

OK. so depends on your interior style. Platform beds tend to be rather modern.
I like them a lot. There is sometimes an issue with the corners (it hurts!!), but upholstery would fix it easily.

Mine is on a platform with drawers under it. I also have a small door at the end for storage and frankly, unless you know it's there, you never see it. Sure makes for a lot of storage having all of the drawers. As far as sleep comfort, you can have a custom mattress made to do whatever you want. Mine was custom made in San Antonio by The Cantwell Mattress Co. They've been around almost 100 years and will make you almost anything you want for any size person too.

We always had platforms. Keep an eye on ventilation if you have carpet. Putting your risers passt foot level you can avoid toe injuries. Height is optional. Our current one has a cat walkway around the sides. My shins can tell. If you decide to go foam go for top of the line, wait for a sale and have a talk with the store manager.
