I've read comments saying not to pour Drano into the kitchen sink into the garbage disposal. What's wrong with doing that? I just did it and it helped a little.

Don't put pasta, rice or beans down the disposal.

I wouldn't pour Drano anywhere.

If your disposal is clogged, you have to remove the clog manually. There are no shortcuts.

Drano can hurt pipes. The best thing to do is snake it.

I don't use Drano type products except as a last resort. Frequently a slow drain can be cleaned out with simple hot, nearly boiling, water. In any case, have proper eye and face protection on when you are working on a slow or stopped up drain. If you pay attention, you will seldom have a stopped up drain, deal with the slow drain on your schedule, don't wait for a full stoppage to pick a time for you. Murphy provides the time the drain picks will be quite inconvenient.

Garbage disposals are a professional plumber's best friend. In the country they make money for people who service septic systems. We take any food products, vegetable trimmings, etc. out to the garden. In winter meat trimmings can go into the wood-stove, or be fed to cats, if it's something OK for a cat to eat.

It's OK to *have* a garbage disposal, just not OK to *use* it much. At least IMHO.

Cool article and pictures, but that has only an anecdotal relationship to the garbage disposal. The same thing could have happened anywhere.

Why stop there? Best bet is to live outdoors. Housing is for suckers.

Put a small box of baking powder down the disposal. Then put in a couple of cups of white vinegar. Watch what will look like that volcano you made in grade school Awhile after the bubbling has stopped, pour almost boiling water down the disposal. Then run the disposal with hot tap water washing away whatever is left there. Still clogged? Repeat this as needed and then do it at least once a month thereafter. And whatever you do, don't put potato or fruit peels or anything else stringy down a disposal.
