I used to have a routine with every house I bought (including this one): two days before moving in I would put a Raid or other type of bug sprayer canister in every room of the house and set it off. Then I left the house closed up overnight and came back the next morning to sweep up the dead bugs (except for the one really bad house where apparently the bug spray just brought them out of the woodwork. I was beating the bugs to death with the Raid box!). At this point I would recommend professional pest control unless you want to use Ortho spray in every nook and cranny and along every baseboard, which is cheaper, of course. For a long-term solution to the outdoor tick problem, I always use Daminix tick tubes. They're pricey, but they sure do work. Make sure your dogs can't play with them though.
Make sure your dogs are taking their heartworm, flea and tick medications regularly, too. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. There are also very effective monthly pills that keep dogs free of fleas and ticks, too -- it's a constant battle here in Georgia, and those two pills are on my calendar to administer every single month. Never had a problem since we started the flea-and-tick pills -- before, we had the stuff you administer as a liquid to the back of their neck, and one year we had the mother of all flea infestations *shudder*. The vet recommended the pill, and voila, no problems since. Hooray!
Call an exterminator. Totally worth the money. Actually, it probably won't cost more than all the do-it-yourself stuff you would have to buy, not to mention the time savings. And they almost all offer a guarantee, so they will come back out for free if you are still having problems.
I am surprised at everyone's surprise. Every house has bugs. Big deal bugs like carpenter ants/bees/termites you call a guy. Spiders you leave alone 'cause they eat the little bugs. The tiny black beetles are carpet beetles, no biggie, hard to get rid of, just keep vacuuming. Wasps you buy the spray from the hardware store. Mosquitos and ticks you can also call a guy or keep your yard mowed and mind that there's no standing water. We have a skeeter vac that work for our yard, our neighbors sprayed pesticide everywhere. Your call.
If you have had rain like we have had rain, it drives the bugs inside. I have never had sugar ants but I have them in the house and garage these year.
I was really surprised with our house. It was vacant for about 2 years and yet, there wasn't many bugs-or dust for that matter. You would think a vacant house would be the perfect place for all sorts of bugs, critters and dust.
We do get the occasional bug now but our cats take care of them. And we do get mice when the temp drops but only one or two. And again, our cats take care of that.
Growing up I lived in a 140+ year old house. Every spring, we'd get ants. One particular spot in the wood floor they would all come pouring out at the same time. Whomever was home would grab the vacuum and just suck em up, dump the bag. It's an old house. It's spring. You're going to get bugs.
If I were OP, I would get the house and yard professionally exterminated. Start off with a clean slate.
