My current system is almost 20 years old and is to the point where I am going to replace it before the summer. I currently have a regular gas/electric package system and am thinking about a gas/heat pump system. I was wondering if anyone has a gas/heat pump unit and if so, how they like it.

My furnace is still going strong, I am considering just replacing the AC parts with a heat pump, keeping the existing furnace and air handler.

My experience says heat pumps work well for AC, not so much for heat. Consider replacing the AC with a heat pump and keep gas for heat.

That's the setup I have - gas hot water heat and an 18 SEER heat pump for AC and as back-up if the gas boiler is clogged or some such. I will say that even with milder temperatures, heat pump heat just doesn't do it for me anymore since I got to experience gas heat - it's just feels warmer to me!

If you have natural gas available... USE IT!! For everything. Stove. Dryer. Water Heater. Furnace.
Do NOT choose a heat pump if you aren't forced to. Stick with actual warmed air for comfort.

What I am considering is a gas/heat pump package. Heat pump for cooling and mild heating and when it gets very cold the system switches over to the gas for heat.

our old place originally had electric/Heat pump 1982. After a couple of spells where the aluminum framed, double paned windows got inside frost, that we decided that the Heat pump was ineffective at 38F. And electric backup just wasn't enough. Eventually replaced the windows to vinyl framed.
We installed gas and kept the heatpump around 1990. Only used the AC part of heatpump in the summer. I Don't think the HP is very efficient but good enough to keep the place cool in the summer. Gas got the place warm fast. Mid Valley Oregon, Common to have freezing days, and above 90.

New mini-splits HP, are effective to much lower temps. Our rental has mini-split with gas hot water backup and one room has wall electric heat. Odd combination but that was how the home was built. Seattle area-rare does it get below freezing or much above 85.

That sounds like a good idea. I've heard of them here, but they're not as common as separate systems (gas heat and just AC).

I understand what it is... I'll repeat: avoid a heat pump (of any sort, kind, or arrangement)
if you aren't compelled to use one by circumstances - - like not having NG available.

Could you expound a bit on your statement?
