Just an architectural detail that adds a little pizzazz to an otherwise boring ceiling. Think of it as what tin ceiling tiles did for houses back in the day. Those are coming back into style also.

I have ceiling fans in both of my tray ceilings. With nine foot ceilings, I would stick my fingertips into the blades if I stretched. But the tray ceiling gives me another foot, which keeps the fan blades high enough to prevent fingertip strikes. Besides, they just make the rooms look more spacious. They were standard features that I could have nixed, but I saw absolutely no downside to having tray ceilings.
