I got a 5000+ sq ft house but want to repaint the interior. There is extensive crown and floor molding and chair rails. A painter made a passing comment it would take 100k to paint it (which I assume is code for not wanting the job). I had a contractor take a look at it and said 50k but would get a painter to do an official estimate... my head is hurting... this is after I got a quote for close to 20k to sand and re-stain the wood floors... I contemplating just doing it myself... can I just ask them to sand the floors and I will stain and seal it myself? Would that save money? I am thinking about painting it myself and plan on testing to see if it is oil on the molding and door casings... is this a good idea?

Maybe you just need to get a smaller house

Had a 26' x 24' room painted recently, it was $200 for labor.

I'd have the floors done professionally.

How many rooms need paint? Painting is something most of us can do on our own, but if you need to paint 8 or so rooms, it could be quite a long and tedious job.

Maybe have certain rooms professionally painted? Paint the others yourself?

A rental paint on a 1500 sq ft home with no crown molding and everything sprayed a single color is about $2k, including ceilings. Once you have a lot of molding and multiple colors you can expect the price to skyrocket. I'd bet $2-$3 a square foot is reasonable for two coats.

I think you need to find a different painter. I'd expect they're charging more based on quality expectations- a 5,000 sq ft house has a higher level of expected detail & quality than a 1,200 sq ft house. A spray&run on a "average" house here is about a buck per sq foot of living space. Closer to two bucks /sq ft if you're getting molding/trim/ceilings & doors done to a high level of detail. Sounds like the contractor is expecting you to nit-pick & pricing accordingly..

We paid $3500.00 for a quality paint job inside and out, 2000 sq. ft. The house was completely empty at the time which made it easier for the painters.

We recently had our two-story foyer, and entire upstairs painted for ~$3000 and that included the paint. About 1800 sq ft.

The crown molding, chair rails, woodwork means a lot of masking and taping. Having the ceiling a different color increases the price. Are there high ceilings that require working on a ladder?

I'd get some more bids, but it isn't going to be cheap
