So do you have a wood burning fireplace? If so, get some twigs to use as kindling. Wad up a piece of newspaper and place the twigs on top. Light the paper and get the twigs lit. Please logs on top of this.

Is it a gas fireplace or a wood burning one?

My gas fireplace gets lit from an electric switch on the wall. It looks just like a light switch. Flame is adjusted with a remote. The fireplace doesn't even open.

We need to be clear on what you have, if you aren't sure, take a picture and post it.

Its a fireplace that has no gas lever or switches or anything. Just logs and a log stand with a "chain like curtain"

Were you ever in the Scouts?

Just light a blinkin' fire. Kindling wood with paper under, then larger sticks, then eventually logs.

So it's not a wood burning fireplace. You do mean fake logs, right? Do you see a gas line connection? If not, it may just be a dummy set for a closed up fireplace.
