For many cars are not the prized possessions they once were...
Garages are popular for space... here... many are detached and set to the rear down a narrow driveway... perfect for a Model T which was the most popular auto back in 1922.
I can't have enough garage space but then I have 50 vehicles...
Both trucks live in the garage so does forge and wood shop. It offers heat and a/c. Neighbors with built up trucks tend to make a dash to the gas stations when weather alerts set off phones with hail warnings.
And you are right, here in Florida you don't find basements.
Nor do you find basements where I am. Or, the town having started life as a mostly summer house place, garages.
Yes, the definition of "junk" varies. It seems that people who throw out anything they haven't used in the last month or so are the ones who apply the junk appellation the most.
Makes sense, keep a $40,000 vehicle out in the elements and keep plastic lawn toys and cardboard boxes in the garage. These are the same people that keep their garbage cans in front of the house. Great neighbors and an asset to the community.

Don’t forget the hillbilly above-ground pool in the back, along with the clothesline to dry laundry.
My neighborhood prohibits street parking except for temporary guests. It really enhances the neighborhood not to have cars parked up and down the street. I didn't go looking for a neighborhood with this rule, but I like it. Even though most of the houses have 3-car garages, there are still some that leave cars in the driveway, I always park in my garage. Thefts from autos are a crime of opportunity and I am not providing that opportunity to anyone if I can help it. Also, I am always thankful my car is protected during hail and windstorms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i1_9A5zST8
We bought our house because of the garages. Two car attached, for the cars, and the former kitchen cupboards and counter for kitchen storage is there. It also has a nice closet for things like lawn chairs or bulk paper storage. Garden tools are there too.
Second two car garage with half bath and A/C, for hubby’s tools and treasures.
Fortunately, we like the house and the neighborhood, but they were secondary.
Many builders cut corners and build a two car garage with one double door. I made sure I had separate doors and made the garage 6 feet deeper than a typical garage. That way I can get two larger SUVs in as well as my lawn tractor, lawn furniture, tools etc. in my garage.

My previous house had 2 doors. My current house has one door. I like one door because I only have one car and I can park farther away from the wall. Everyone has different needs.
