Hi All,
I have an egress window in my basement, and this window has a well. It turns out, this well needs a well cover to save it from flooding. I need to buy/build a small cover/roof above this well (without covering it completely), just to make sure that rainwater doesn't get there. I searched internet but found only plastic covers that lay on the well walls. I don't want this type of cover, I want to have air flow to/from basement. Does anyone know where to buy such things?
Wonderful solution. I'm in a similar position however I have a brick patio that comes all the way up to the house (and I don't believe we have a drainage system of any kind).
I was actually considering an inch thick plexiglass plate to cover the well keeping it level to the patio while supporting the weight of a person if it were stood on. It would keep the water out and let light in. We have other windows available for ventilation.
My neighbor did something similar when he build a covered porch and wanted to allow light into the basement.
Consumer well covers are unsightly and ill fitting based on what I have to work with.
I would like to know who started this dumb idea for this fire code?
How many times in this country has a person been trapped in a basement for the new code to be worth it?
These deep window wells and outside stair wells are nothing new, have been done a long time ago.
They created a lot of different problems for the home owner and this is why they stopped using them.
Deep window wells are catch basins for water which does not help when keeping water away from the house, the size of the well for code purposes creates a hazard when falling into them, they create a maintenance problem with snow and ice and if not taken care of there will be damage to the house, and where is the easy exit when trying to climb through ice.
I could go on and on about this including the problems with bulkhead stairs.
Not sure if this new code was to save lives or to make some businesses rich.
Here we are today trying also to keep our homes save from break ins and now there is a place for some one to hide while prying open a window.
So why does the code not allow the exit to a garage? There is a fire wall between the two being the house wall.
I did build a house in 1999 without this problem and now that I'm planning to build again just finding this out, I am pissed.

Install a drain either piped to daylight or an appropriately sized drywell.

They're far more about firefighters (in full turnout gear) getting INTO the structure.
Can you attach the well cover higher up so that it acts like a little porch roof? And make sure it is oversized so the rain water washes outside of the well. And make a little berm around the well so ground water stays out
