From birth to age 18 - 10 houses/apartments (3 countries)
From 18 to 50ish - 9 houses/apartments (2 countries)

Neither my parents nor I have ever been in the military, but my dad did move a lot for his career.

I really hate the stress and packing that moving requires. So it's probably a good thing I've only lived in 6 different homes in 61 years. The next move, a downsize, will hopefully be our last.

When I was a child, we moved about every year or two, often to a different town. I hated all the moving as would get uprooted about the time I made some close friendships. Then I moved a lot in college as I would go home for the summer and move into a new apartment during the school year. Since I graduated from college, I've lived in 3 different homes all in the same city and in my current home for 23 years. I'm 63 and newly retired and plan to move to out of state for retirement. Maybe one more single family home and eventually to a senior apartment or assisted living in my old age.

My father was in the Air Force.

From my birth to his retirement - 8 moves (I was 9 when he retired).

My college years - 3 moves (for internships in other states. I did not count moves to various apartments during my college years).

From my college graduation to my retirement - 19 moves (worked for Department of Defense, including overseas tours).

I can see maybe two more moves in the future.

I'm 29, I've lived in 5 different states:

My House in New Jersey from 1989-2007
College Dorm in Vermont 2007-2008
Parent's house in Upstate New York (for like a summer)
Family Home in Vermont:2008-2016
Apartment in Pennsylvania: 2006-2017
2nd Apartment in Pennsylvania: 2017-2018
Apartment in South Carolina 2018-Present.

So far my total is 7, I would like to buy a house at the end of my lease term (August), but that probably isn't going to be feasible. I'm not sure if the plan in August is to move into a bigger apartment (not ideal, because trying to save money for a house, and the 1st/Last /Security will take a chunk out of that), or stay in the one we have. No problems with it, just small.

So potentially 8 or 9 by the end of next year. I don't want to move after I buy my first house. I'm not planning on expanding my family, so the need for a bigger house won't be a factor. And since I just started my career here, I hope to get the house paid off by the time I hit retirement.

Wow, lots of moving and lots of military folks out there!

Since others have added this, I'll add it too - being in a military family (twice) means that I've also lived in three different countries.

While it's been a lot of moving, I think that overall the effect has been positive in my life. Now that I'm no longer a military "dependent" I've slowed the moving down considerably. But I probably still have a few more moves in me.

Keep 'em coming - this is interesting!
