Stain never peels. It just fades slowly. Paint requires primer and over wood it will eventually start to peel. Then you will need to scrape and start all over
Chose a solid stain. It has pigment suspended in it just like paint does. You do not use primer with stain. Just spray it on.
Log homes are stained for very good reasons. Please do not use paint!
Google around for a bit and you will understand why...
Log homes are like having a race car. If you stay on top of the maintenance (oil changes) it is manageable, but as soon as you let things go for a bit you will have major issues that will cost more than the maintenance ever would (blown engine).
I just went through what you are looking at (35k in repairs) and you need to look at it like replacing the roof. Do it right the first time and stay on top of maintenance so you aren't in this ship ten years from now.
Painting the exterior isn't a smart solution for a long period. You have to repaint it after a few years. Few local maintenance companies provide exterior maintenance at a reasonable rate. You can go through it.
