It just occured to me this week that since these things 'attach' small debris , sand, tiny stones...they are being dragged across the surface of the floor.
I'm concerned now, about the abrasive effect on the finish.
And yes....every day both our feet and the dogs drag in a lot of grit.
Anybody notice mysterious scratching ?

i lived with real hardwood in the bedrooms and living room for 3 years. i used to drag the swiffer around, my son ran with his walker all through them--never a scratch. the only thing that really scratched them was if i moved the furniture the wrong way. i used old english oil on it and it sort of hid it for a little while.
but actually i think you are supposed to sweep first and then swiffer up the dust. this way you get the big pieces and lots of dirt off and then you are just shining it up.

I have not noticed any scratches at all and I use Swiffer all the time and do not sweep first either.

when I mention scratching, I only mean what shows when the sun streaks on it and you're looking at an angle, not anything deep enough to see ordinarily.
Maybe I'm just being obsessive

I vacuum first (canister with soft floor brush, not the powerhead) then I swiffer, I have no scratches on any of my hardwood flooring. My rule, shoes off at front door when I have visitors, I use the garage/mud room entry, I rarely use my front entrance.

Yep - vacuum clean first and then damp swifter (dries almost instantly).
