Hi,

I have water in drip pan in one of my air conditioners in attic. I saw last time repair person put bleach inside to clear clog up. Problem is that there are 2 holes there, one which is opening into drip pan and another one right next to it with T connector, one goes into drain and another one into inside air conditioner unit.
Where I'm supposed to pour bleach in? And generally what is correct sequence of cleaning it up?

Thanks,
G

I'm no expert, but I'm fairly certain that you would not want any bleach going into the unit itself. Bleach treatments are recommended to dissolve mud-dauber nests, help along any dust clods, etc. etc. that can lead to the pan overflowing (which is bad). If you can't trace the drain line to the outside of your house, I wouldn't put any bleach in there...

If you can open the TEE connection, take a look and see if there is any standing water, or nasty gunk inside. The clogs are usually in the trap or at the point where the condensate leaves the a/c coil.

Sometimes all it takes is a turkey baster and some hot water to flush it out and get it flowing again.

If the drain line is clogged, You generally use a shop wet vac to suck the snot out of the drain line, then pour some hot water in to flush it more, then put some bleach in to kill the bulk of the remaining mold. You can suck the water out of the drain pan at the same time, and visit your local home store for the little mold killing tablets to place in it. They are pretty inexpensive and last a good while.

Default An ounce of prevention

Every 4 months I use a funnel and pour a gallon milk jug mixed 2/3 water and 1/3 bleach down the air vent pipe on top of the drain line you describe. This little preventative measure flushes out the mold & gunk and I've never had a clog.

Bleach:

Free chlorine oxidizer that disinfects:

Hypochlorus Acid:

Bad for anything related to metal.

The byproduct of the cleaner is even worse for the coils.....chlorine gas.
