No. There are two complete systems. We change the filter in both the basement, for the heater/air conditioner which takes care of the downstairs and also in the attic for the heat pump which takes care of the upstairs.
I guess without seeing pictures then it's kinda hard to figure out what's going on. If the filters are larger they will load up slower. If there are leaks in the return system after the filter but before the positive side of the fan dust will bypass the filter and build up on the fan and possibly coil. Is it possible this home is tighter or newer than previous homes?
Since the house sat empty for a year, you probably need to have the duct work cleaned. It'll cost you a few hundred dollars, but it's not something you can do yourself very easily because you don't have the tools.
Biggest scam being perpetuated against homeowner's these days. I doubt if one legitimate HVAC professional would come on this board and be able to admit that there is an ounce of value in this service unless there was some mitigating circumstance such as a flood, construction debris in the supply air duct work or a dead varmit in the duct work.

Last home was a townhome we bought it new. It was 7 years old when we sold. Our filter is larger here in the basement unit . Strange but in our old house I could smell when it was time to change the filter. In this one I can't tell. Could it be that the air is just cleaner and doesn't need changing as often?
Really though, if you go by the dusting and vacuuming I need to do I think not. At any rate, wouldn't I detect a smell if dust was accumulating on the fan and coil?
Not really. You might notice, to a point, the air seems to be colder coming out of the vents and your power bill rises in comparable time frames and conditions, not something that usually happens.

Oh yeah, sure that could be. But, unless the duct-work is internally insulated, there probably isn't anything for mold to grow on inside the duct-work.
Someone mentioned the evap coil section which is what I would suspect. I've seen some of those condensate pans look like a petri dish that Madame Curie would be proud to own.
What I'd do...
Turn of the blower section.
Find the plastic tube that goes from that section to a sump or floor drain.
Remove the closest panel to that little hose.
Take my flashlight and have a look.
Use a wet vac to clean out the slime.
rinse our that pan with a 50/50 bleach solution.
If that ain't it, I would ask...do you habitually use drugs, stimulants or alcohol?
If not... you may have a focused, non-terminal repeating phantasm or a Class Five Full Roaming Vapor...a real nasty one, too.
