We recently purchased a new construction home and selected the option of a walk-out basement. The basement is a typical below-ground basement so the builder put steps in a "cut out" which lead to a sliding glass door. There is a drain at the bottom of the steps next to the door. After a recent home inspection the inspector recommended some type of roof structure or cover to alleviate the problem of excessive snow and rain accumulating in this area. Does anyone have experience with this... and/or any recommendations of how to go about putting in a roof/cover? Thanks!
My house was built in 1952 and has the exact type of entrance to the basement you describe. There is a small roof over it that is made of the same type of shingles as the main roof. The ones that are very coarse- I do not know the name.
Anyway, nothing a good roofing man or carpenter could not build you.
As long as your drain is not clogged with leaves or snow it shouldn't be a problem if your sump pump is working properly. A walkup basement is pretty common around here and is a good emergency exit for those with a relatively flat lot. Adding a roof structure might be an eye sore and limit the amount of natural light going into the basement. The only thing I would suggest is adding tile flooring near the basement exit just in case a little water gets in it doesn't damage carpet or hardwood flooring in that area.
Any experienced contractor could make an awning type of roof over that... shouldn't be too costly and make it look like it belongs on the house, with shingles to match etc.
I had one done and it looks terrific...just a flat roof like structure with a slight pitch to let the water run down.
