We selected and payed for our appliances as the contractor said he was ready for them. They were delivered by the store for free and the contractor installed without extra charge.

We got our appliances independent of the GC because he would have made scheduling its installation a PITA and because he slapped on 15% for everything. Why should we pay an extra 15% so he could not-deliver the item, not-install it, and push us to buy from his favorite supplier? The stores themselves deliver. In our case, the supplier had recently changed their policy so that delivery men were not allowed to install items (the result of a frivolous lawsuit by a greedy buyer). But a local handyman did a fine job installing them, at reasonable cost.

There was NO reason to have a non-particating person charge us to watch guys deliver and install appliances.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense.
Take out a 30-year loan for an appliance that will last 7 years.

OP rolled the cost of those appliances into their mortgage 10 years ago. I wonder how many have already been replaced while they get to enjoy paying for them for 20 more years.

As for the general question, my builder installed the stove and dishwasher as they couldn't get a certificate of occupancy without that. I bought all the other appliances myself, which included free delivery and installation from the store (a small local appliance chain). They offered I think 18 months financing with no interest, so I did pay it off over that period of time.

10 years later... you’re still paying for those appliances - do they still work?

That is what I did. I did ask them to put in a water line to the fridge.

Hope this helps!

Wait, what? You had an agreed price for the dishwasher and installation, and then he demanded more after it was done? I have a hard time understanding how you would owe that.

Then that explains everything- be glad you didn't get taken for more! Contracts work both ways- they protect you AND the contractor. What you negotiate for is what makes it binding.
