Our 3 year old frigidaire side by side quit freezing suddenly
yesterday....

The refrigerator side temp was rising to past 40 so I added
frozed ice containers from our deep freeze to save my
food and now it is 45 in that side. I don't know if it is
cooling some or if that temp is because of the ice I added.

I think I can hear the relay switch click and the compressor
come on...

I would like to know if there are any easy things to check
that I could handle without a lot of experience/knowledge.
Our budget is tight and I would love to save a service bill.

Our last frig lasted 15 years without a service..

Thanks in advance..

Open up the rear panel of the freezer. See if the evaporator coil is iced up.

Here you go. I found a picture. http://appliancejunk.com/blog/2009/11/08/frigidaire-side-by-side-not-cooling/ (broken link)

Thanks South Range...

no , it wasn't iced...

I heard a click & the compressor came on briefly
after unplugging & plugging it back in today.

I decided to try to replace a $ 6 dollar
universal starter relay because it sounds
like that is possible..
I will pick that up this afternoon.

worth a try anyway..

After trying that I think it is past my ability,
so I will call the repairman.

Might want to try pulling the fridge out from the wall and vacuuming all the dust that has accumulated over the years from the back. compressor area and underneath the fridge.

Thanks..I did that this morning...how did you know it had been years LOL

I got a 3 in 1 relay/capacitor part for $15 and even
put it in myself..

It seems to be cooling but I am not sure if it will freeze...

If I fixed this frig I am going to be so proud of myself ..
If not at least I tried..

If the compressor fails to start you might want to install a "hard start capacitor". They sell for $10 to $15. Not all that hard to install.
