That being said, in our last house we had solid oak flooring in the main great room, painted high basebaord mouldings, stained oak stiles and bannister for the stairs, and the entry door was solid fir. We stained the fir a little darker than the floors, and it really didn't stand out like a sore thumb or anything. It was different, but it still blended in. But it wasn't a 'fancy' house but more like an Appalachian country style Cape Cod.
Meh- it worked.

I agree, I'm going to go with one color (oak). I think it's also okay to mix woods/stains as long as they aren't too similiar, and there is contrast. For example, if you have light cabinets in the kitchen, a dark floor would look good. Same thing with furniture.
