Go to a store like HomeGoods, Marshall's, or TJ Maxx and look for a glass vase, or some candle holders.

I recently got married, and the most helpful thing definitely was gift cards. A few people gave us gift cards for home depot and wal mart for and stores like that for $20, and before you know it when had a few hundred dollars to spend! It was especially good since we had just bought a new house and needed stuff for it.

Gift cards, like bjornb17 said:

* Home Depot, Lowes, etc. especially if they own a house or thinking about it;
* Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, William & Sonoma or any other favorite store
* Some kind of restaurant, dinner for two

Or just plain cash ($$) will do.

The only physical gift I would give: a very nice frame, glass or metal for their new wedding portraits.

I will third the gift card suggestion. Those are definitely the most helpful for newly married couples. It is hard to pick out a frame or other decorative items because your taste may not be the same as the couple's. We received some pretty crystal and silver frames, but they just didn't match our home at all, so they were never used.

Granted I am terribly practical in a lot of ways, but I remember one inexpensive item that I sorely needed after my wedding and didn't receive......
A big box of pretty Thank You cards!

For sure gift cards

Things like kitchen towels, bath towels, kitchen gadgets, frames - I love home items so any of those would work - for someone who likes camping - camping gear etc... I think it depends on the coupld.

We purchase a clothes hamper and fill it with spices, soap, toilet paper, etc., things that people need when starting out.

Vases, crystal, etc stuff nobody ever uses. Those things just sit in a room that nobody ever uses (dining room, maybe a formal living room).

Give them practical, non perishable stuff that will definitely be used:

Batteries (AA or AAA)
Postage Stamps
Big packages of Costco Toilet Paper
Compact Florescent Lightbulbs

I registered at Home Depot when we got married.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I went with a set of monogrammed stone coasters.

They aren't starting off, as they are older and have been living together for quite some time now so the normal gifts wouldn't work. So I just went with a home accesory (sp?).
