I have this off brand dishwasher in a house we just moved in (Holiday). The water from the dishwasher doesn't get hot enough to actually clean the dishes. I've lived in three apartments and house with dishwashers and there was ALWAYS a massive amount of steam when opened while the jets were spraying. This doesn't happen on this dishwasher. I have to stick my hand in the bottom to feel that the water is warm, but not hot for clean dishes. The water heater temp is just fine.
I'm wondering if the dishwashers in my former residences had some sort of mechanism to heat up the water after it came from the pipes? They were Kenmore (love them!) and a Frigidare. Could it be some problem with the water lines? We had the plumber double check that everything was connected properly.
I'm considering buying a different one, but I'm not sure if I'll have the same problem with a new one.
Yes, there is a heating element in dishwashers. And they can go out. Not really a job for diy to replace it, but having it replaced by an appliance tech shouldn't be too expensive. Definitely cheaper than buying a new dishwasher.
Wait a minute. Are you saying that the heating element is what heats the water during the wash cycle? I thought that was solely for the heated dry cycle after the wash cycle. If so, it definitely is not hot as I've put my hand underneath it to feel the water at the bottom.
The heating element you see on the bottom of the tub is the dryer element. However, *most* dishwashers have a booster heater nowadays. If you can post the brand and model number and I'll see what I can find about your particular dw.

Okay, here we go. Holiday was made by Maytag, as a low end brand. The heater element does work as the water heat booster, and the part is still available. Call a local whirlpool or maytag repairman, they should be able to get it for you in a couple of days time.
Btw, don't ever touch a heating element. Not only can it burn, it can also electrocute under the right circumstances. Just an FYI

Great! But I still think I may get another dishwasher, but I'm not sure if I could get my husband on board. I figured it was a low end brand and I'd rather get a better quality used one.
Tell your husband how much it'll cost a repairman to replace that heater element ... then he'll get on board with getting a better replacement model instead.
