I'm a little embarrassed to admit: the noise was coming from a butterfly net my daughter had hung up on the back of our house. The wind made the handle rattle against the outside of the house. Yes, that only took me about a week to figure out.
Sorry to waste ya'lls time!
You can relax now, K'ledgeBldr, finally knowing the answer to the dilemma.

Don't be embarrassed. You know what? I/we are happy and grateful you came back to tell us the outcome. It can get quite frustrating when the one post one hit wonders come on, ask a question and never return to even say thanks for the help. So my hat is off to you today as well as a round of REPs.
Sorry, now that I think of it, you guys are going out of your way to think up a solution.
I probably should have come back earlier...you learn something new every day, eh?
Doncha love people who post without reading anything but the first post? Obviously, the people in question won't read this so I'll just go "Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah You made a stinky in public!"
I've been seeing this crop up more and more, and it is one reason that even since the days of usenet I'll avoid threads that have too many posts unless I've invested in it. They get into thread drift, flame wars, and repetitive responses.
Sometimes, when looking at cartoons, it takes a butterfly net to capture loonies. Thus is my contribution to thread drift for the day. If none of this makes sense - READ THE WHOLE THREAD!
I have the same thing happening in my bathroom in the house we just moved into. I thought it was a woodpecker!! Pest control said this was unlikely in this area (Austin TX). Sounded like it was in teh walls.
Today I was in the bathroom when it happened and it was coming from behind the electrical outlet. I could actually see it vibrating.
I googled this ' electrical outlet making a clicking noise' and there's lots of pages on this. I know you said it only happens when it's windy but thought it may be worth a try.
We have the exact same problem. When windy it sounds like there are metal wires hanging alongside the studs and hitting back and forth against the inside and exterior wall. We had a contractor take a look at it and he felt that the studs were rubbing against either the drywall inside or the exterior wall. He suggested we anchor the studs that the noise are coming from with a long nail. I have noticed that there is a small gap between the exterior wall and where the overhang joins the wall and I think air is getting in there because thats the only gap I can see along the outside of the house and its where the rattling is the worst on the inside. Does anyone have thoughts on this?
We had the same problem over the last month. It turned out that the exterior wires were rattling against our siding. That's it. It sounded like it was inside the walls. Just everyong describes in this thread, it sounded like there were rodents in the walls. Not so. It was just the wind shaking the exterior wires that are coming into our house. They merely needed to be anchored down against the siding. The old anchors must have shaken loose during a storm.
Thank goodness this is on here, I was afraid to fall asleep thinking it was rats!! This will at least give me piece of mind for tonight and I can look for the problem tomorrow. Thank you!
