Seattle has The Space Needle, San Antonio has The Tower of the Americas, and Dallas has The Reunion Tower.

Could Houston benefit from a needle-like tower? If so where would it go? Does anybody know if there's ever been any plans to build one?

Well, not necessarily. The JP Morgan observation deck is nice but it's only open to the public during business hours and it's only a secondary lobby...an exchange of sorts for the building's elevators.

I just think it'd be neat to have a dedicated needle/tower with a restaurant and bar up top. I know the Hyatt Regency has the spindle top but I don't know if it's even open any more. Even if it is, does anybody know if it's a decent restaurant? It was just a suggestion/question.

Default Williams Tower

We have the Williams Tower, formerly and sometimes still known as the Transco Tower. It has a observation deck on the 51st floor. I think it looks better, more modern than those ugly outdated Needle Towers. I've been to both the one in Seattle and San Antonio. Nothing special in my opinion.

Transco deck has been closed to the general public since 9/11 unless they recently reopened it.

Wells Fargo Plaza also has one.

The Spindletop revolving restaurant at the Hyatt was blown off the tracks that made it revolve during Hurricane Ike. It's not going to get fixed anytime soon, if ever.

Just trying to see what we're going for here. If this is for the sake of having a "landmark" then I don't see what having something all these other cities have accomplishes to that end. I bet you could find a random thousand people from outside Texas pictures of the ones in San Antonio and Dallas and at least half of them wouldn't know which is which. Seattle may be a bit more recognizable. Of course, Americans in general are not noted for their geographic knowledge.

It was closed for renovations a couple years ago but I think it's open again, at least partially.

As long as it doesn't look like San Antonio's. That thing is an eyesore and a half. I think we'd benefit more from a nice looking 80 to 100 story skyscraper mimicking the John Hancock building.

I'd like for us to have a cool landmark of sorts. Just not a copycat and yes, the one in San Antonio is ugly and short (i'd never pay money to go up it). Ditto for Seattle. Unless it's the calibre of the CN or Eiffel, let's not bother. But landmarks don't have to be a needle tower, it could be anything, as long as it's esthetic and interesting and awesome!
