I like viewing art from local artists. My favorite is renowned houstonian, the late, black artist John biggers and his row house art. I would love to find some moderately priced produced prints as I can't afford the real thing. Anyone know where I might find this?

I'm also interested in the names of other Houston artists who have achieved some acclaim. I understand Rene Wiley in Galveston is also one to look at. She also showcases other artists at her gallery.

Looking for artists and gallery names in Houston area where I may find local artists of acclaim. If any of the artsy crowd is on here, would aporeciate suggestions on Houston galleries to visit and sightsee.

Default Festival...

Wait for the Bayou City Art Festival which takes place this year in March. You will find many local artists, some famous, and their works for sale, it is always a good time to find that which you seek at good prices, plus you can meet and speak with the artist.

There are maybe 40 or 50 art galleries throughout Houston and their offerings run the gamut from high-end collectors' favorites to amateur/kitsch.The Houston Press has a pretty much up-to-date list of them online. Click on any gallery's website and pull up the list of artists in the stable to view CV's and photos of their work. Many galleries schedule individual or group shows throughout the year, so an artist whose work you want to see in person might not have anything currently available if you just drop by. Galleries may ask to add your name to an email list for invitations to openings.

Have you asked the head of the TSU art department (sorry -- don't know who it is now) where you can find reproductions of John Biggers' work for sale? In artspeak, "print" usually refers to an original, usually 2-D work that may be either one-of-a-kind (monoprint) or one of a series of multiples.

Have fun! Gallerists love to talk about artists and art!

Thanks for the info - hadn't thought about calling TSU's art dept. "Duh" My former dentist had one of Bigger's numbered prints in his office as well as tons of other art he collected.
