first thing that came to mind was the roaches. One of the things I don't miss about Houston. They are very big, they fly, and oddly, they are kind of smart which makes them even more creepy!

Oh boy, what kind? how about all kinds? They seem to thrive in heat and humidity. I love winter, seldom see them around in winter.

Oh man... My parents live in Texas now (We were all from the northeast originally), and the bugs that may be found in the area are scary to any new yorker.... My two least favorite bug-relevant experiences in Houston:
1. The 2-in long **** roaches like to fly from the trees I to the pool and then swim (remarkably adeptly!) to the edge of the pool and scale the side.
2. In the spring-summer some of the most horrific, albeit harmless spiders oppear.... I have a rather significant spider phobia, so wooded areas at that time of year are a massive challenge... I do not exaggerate when I say that they may reach 3.5 inches from leg to leg when spread across a web... Not sure of the breed, but they are horrifying.

At least we have no scorpions!* One thing I don't miss about Austin.

* That I know of. If you know otherwise, please don't inform me.

don't forget those lovebugs that show up and crap out everybodys car for a month every year. Those are big fun to deal with, as well.
