Using some common sense and not associating with people of questionable morals and values should help you to avoid all but the most random of crimes (which can happen ANYWHERE). Like just about any major U S city if you come looking for trouble you will easily find it...if you mind your business and choose your friends wisely you most likely won't have too many problems.
