Hi there

I am moving to Houston with my husband and 7 month old baby in March. We are currently in Houston visiting and looking for a home etc to lease, which we have successfully done (Westheimer Lakes North in the Katy area). I have some questions which might seem rather basic/obvious but wondered if anyone can help.

1. Doctors surgery. I know the medical side of things is quite different over here and we do have medical cover. Do we need to register with a doctors sugery like we do back home? Any advice etc

2. Baby stuff. My daughter would be due jabs when she 1 year old back home. Does anyone know how I go about making sure she gets the right immunisations when we are in the USA?

3. I am also looking to return to work in June/July. Can anyone recommend childcare near WLN?

4. I go to mums and baby groups back home. I am assuming there are such things (and more) going on in Houston. Is anyone able to shed any light on the life that exists for mums and babies?!

Thank you in Advance!!

I am sure you will get lots of help here but also try British Expats (USA) forum. There are quite a few people from Scotland that post on there and several of them have just arrived and are living in the Katy area.

Thanks so much for that. Will check it out.

I have also heard that it is quite common to fumigate homes every few months to minimise intrusion from roaches, spiders etc. Do you know anything about this?

thanks

Your doctor will be determined by your medical insurance. There will be a list of in-network doctors that you can choose from. After you get settled, find a family practice doctor in your area that is on the list and you will be set. You will need a pediatrician that is on the list for your baby. They will give you the information on which immuniziations they will need.

The are tons of mom's groups around houston. Most have some sort of website or yahoo group that you can join to help you meet people and attend play groups. There is a ton of activities to go to young kids.

You do not need to fumigate the house unless your house is infested with bugs. I would get a pest control service that will come out at least quarterly to spray for bugs.

Presumably you can work on your spouse's visa or qualify for your own? I ask as my spouse can't.

Thanks Liljo22, all that info is very helpful! I will get googling for mums groups around where we will be living.

BDFP. The company I work for in Scotland has an office in Houston and they are looking to transfer me to that office. I will be on my husbands L Visa and if I wish to work via his visa I will have to apply for my authorisation to work card which will take 3 months or so. Or, my work will submit my own VISA application and I will work on my own visa. Not until June/July though, so will be enjoying some time exploring and settling in!

Thank you for everyone's comments!!

Hi, we moved from Scotland almost 3 years ago [my how time flies!]. For doctors, yes you should look for a doctor that is 'in-network' with your insurance company, you can often use 'out-of-network' doctors too but you will pay more out of pocket. We found a great family practitioner who trained in Edinburgh of all places that will see the whole family which is great although most folks over here have a separate Dr., pediatrician, gynecologist etc etc. Your Dr. or pediatrician will keep you right on the vaccination front - they are different from Scotland and the schools insist that they have had them for enrollment [although you are a few years off that!].

Can't help you with childcare as we are in Pearland, South of Houston but definitely check out britishexpats.com, I am sure there are a few newbies that have just moved with babies in tow.

Have fun with the move and feel free to pm with any other questions, I'm more than happy to share what we have learned over the past few years.

I went to the Burns Supper a few nights ago put on by the Heather and Thistle society. Something you might want to look into when you are feeling homesick.
