Hi guys

Does anyone know of any good places to stop between houston to austin. We're looking for non-touristy, local gems. We are thinking of going through 290 and stop at Brenham and take some pics of the wildflowers. And also at Elgin I was told there is a bbq place to eat at. Our routes are flexible...we can either go I-10 or 290. So if anyone out there knows any local gems we'll greatly appreciate it!!

thanks!!

If you take I-10 to 71 you can stop at Hruska's for a burger (highly rated) and baked goodies &/or Weikels for Kolaches and other baked goods. I usually stop at one on the way there and the other on the way back. Weikels just re-built their whole place from an old, full of character place to a modern mini-Buckees but the food is the same. Good restrooms too.

If you do go through Brenham, "Must Be Heaven" is a local favorite stop for lunchtime sandwiches in downtown Brenham. Royers is also great, but check the hours - I believe they are closed Mon/Tue/Wed.

You can go via Brenham and come back via I-10/71

Brenham has the Bluebell Ice Cream Factory .yummmmm. It is only open on weekdays though.

Whole bunch of Texas BBQ places along I-10. Mikeska's is good.

But I love the ones in Lockhart . there are like 4 of them in one block. Take your pick.

For what it's worth, I feel Royer's is overrated and their apple pie was not good by any means. JMO of course. I was also more than a little annoyed that my mother in law insisted we drive all the way up there just to eat there so perhaps my expectations were a little high.

I definitely did not like the apple pie though.

Per their website, they are only open Thursday - Sunday

He calls himself the pieman. We don't eat the pie. I feel the crust is too thick and doughy. Many people love it. I would not drive all the way to Round Top to go to Royers, but it is worth the trip if you are going to Austin that way. Friends in Burton think they have much better places for lunch. DH would go I 10 so he could go to the Shiner Brewery and on into Austin to Threadgill's on Lamar or Hut's

290 Cafe is on the edge of Austin, between Elgin and Austin on 290. I have heard all sorts of great reviews but we have never stopped there as we usually in a hurry to get to Austin.

It's big with the biker crowd as we've never seen it without motorcycles in the parking lot.
