How bad is the traffic going west on 610 between Shepherd and 290 during morning rush hour? I understand it may be heavy but is it as bad as 610 S through the Galleria area (which I consider a nightmare)?

Not even close to being as bad as the traffic going through the Galleria area. Nothing can really compare to that traffic.

You're right, the galleria is hell. But I agree with westhou, the two don't compare since 610 eventually moves (even if it is at 6mph). It's bad, but probably a little better since they did work on it this year. I used to work near 610 & 290 and would leave extra early when I was commuting from Humble. Working from 7-4 made a huge difference, especially in the mornings.

you should check out the houston traffic maps (online). they tell you the current speeds on the highways. a great feature is that you can look at their archive and see what the speeds were like on different days at different times. it's GREAT when you're trying to figure out where to move.

Thanks for the tip PP. That's what I need. I'm having to go different routes depending on what my children are doing for the summer and I need to know when to the leave the house.
