The vaccine when I was a child was the inactivated or killed vaccine which was developed by Salk in 1955. The oral polio vaccine did cause some cases of polio, but it was not the cause of the epidemic. The oral polio vaccine did cause some 8 to 10 cases per year which is why it was removed in the US, but it was removed in 2000, not in 1963. And, the oral polio vaccine is still used in countries where polio is more of a threat. Polio was eliminated in the US in 1991, but can still be imported from Africa and Asia. The routine vaccination in the US though is the IPV or inactivated vaccine that was developed in 1988 and became routine in 1997. It is a much stronger version of the original IPV.

The epidemic struck 60,000 children per year. The vaccination (mostly the OPV) wiped out the disease except for those struck down by the vaccine which is why the change to the IPV was made. Striking 6 to 10 children per year is certainly unacceptable now, but saving 60,000 per year made the risk reasonable back in the 50s and 60s.

SV40 is linked to cancer, btw, not to the incidence of polio caused by the Salk Vaccine. Your assertion was that these children had gotten polio from the vaccine which is simply not true of those who contracted polio during the epidemic in large numbers.

Studies researching SV40 DNA in MM tissue observed a wide range of prevalences (0% to 70%); causes of variability were not convincingly identified. An association of MM with SV40 was suggested but confounding factors and biases were not considered. Cohort studies on humans inoculated with contaminated vaccines did not show an increased incidence but their statistical power was limited. Diffusion of SV40 in humans is linked to polio vaccines produced in 1955-63 from SV40-infected monkeys. A 11-12% prevalence of SV40 in adults were reported in the USA, 2-6% in Europe and Africa. The age pattern of MM does not suggest a cohort effect related to contaminated vaccines.

Association of SV40 with human MM is suggested from laboratory observations but still lacks confirmation in well designed epidemiological studies. Other putative co-factors in MM occurrence are mutations in genes involved in repair of damage caused by asbestos, notably DNA-repair genes. Preliminary observations are available but epidemiological studies are needed to test this hypothesis.
