We recently relocated to the Katy area. I am interested in enrolling my children in a Chinese school or getting a Chinese tutor for my elementary school aged children. This will be their first try at Chinese school. Any recommendations? The ones I have found online are all in the Houston area - any near Katy?

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Katy has a good number of Chinese speakers. Katy along with the Houston area has a good number of Chinese schools that accept non-Chinese speaking students of all ages. You can contact the Chinese schools you already found online and see if there is a "branch" site nearer or in Katy. If you still have trouble finding one let me know as I have very close ties with the Chinese community there.

Thank you for the information about Chinese schools. I will contact those schools that were listed to get more information. It seems most schools are segregated by age/grade - would my children coming in be grouped with much younger children? Many of these schools offer chinese as part of their summer camps in the summer - do you know of any schools that offer Chinese immersion programs for the summer (ie. not without the other activities)? Do any of you have any personal experience with these schools and can offer insight into the quality of the schools?

Thank you for all your help!

Try contacting the Chinese Community Center of Houston, here is some information below, hopefully not too late to register for July??:
Also, I know it's too late for this summer but there are Chinese language summer camps out of state, especially the MMLA programs, but they accept kids from age 12 and up in general, I think...

zhugeliang1 - thanks for that info! I found that also this weekend and will check it out. The lazy part of me was hoping there will be a similar program closer to Katy, but so far have not been able to find something like this closer to home.

A lot of Chinese language activities tend to happen near the Bellaire area which is nice that your kids can be exposed to shopping areas selling Asian foods, signs in Chinese characters, festivals featuring Chinese arts etc all that in minutes from Katy as opposed to hours away for some people! I am going to DM you with information about STARTALK programs in a minute....

HISD just opened its first Chinese immersion school. It's a public magnet school so it's free and all of its students will be fluent and be able to read and write in Chinese and English by the time they graduate the elementary school. They are currently accepting applications and will open August 2012. It's at Gordon Elementary school in Bellaire, TX. There will be a information session for parents on March 20th, 2012 at 630-8pm in the Gordon Elementary cafeteria.

Here's the website.

I saw that too in fact they are now recruiting teachers for the Chinese immersion. Austin just got approval for their Chinese immersion school to start this fall.
