Actually, they do exactly that. I think it's a territorial thing: "Oh, yeah, you are not getting in MY space!'"

Quit using your blinker and notifying them.

Great question - it is totally rude (and illegal). When we moved here, someone told us that Houstonians view using a blinker as a sign of weakness.

How rude! But, if they're driving with their windows down on a day like today (when the temp is over 100) dont do anything to make them angry.

I just moved from San Antonio and it's worse over there.

It happened to me twice in San Antonio that I put my blinker on to get on the right lane because my exit was coming up about 1 mile ahead.
There was nobody there, I was just doing the right thing and all of a suddened some sob speeds up with the only purpose to block me from getting on the right lane
I guess they got mad that I was trying to get off the highway.

If your really going as fast or faster than them and you're far enough in front to get in front of them, then why not simply put on your blinker and immediately change lanes before they can respond?

Most of the time when I see people having trouble changing lanes is when they are either going slower than traffic in the lane they want in, or expect everyone else to back up and make room for them so they don't have to change their speed.

What annoys me are the people who have to tap their brakes whenever they turn on their signal, as if the two are mechanically interlinked, even if there is nothing in front of them to brake for. Those people probably think the car in the next lane is speeding up when it is actually them that is slowing down.

Well in terms of people in the fast lane speeding up when someone in the middle lane puts on their blinker, I think the better question would be "Why do people attempting to get into the fast lane totally disregard the speed of the person they are pulling in front of?"

THAT drives me crazy. If I am doing 75 in the fast lane, and some yahoo on my right is doing 65 and puts their blinker on, I will speed up to 80 or 85 to avoid having to put on MY brakes and sit behind them. THAT is what is rude.

Everyone knows the minimum speed for the fast lane in Houston is 75, and some would argue 80. If you aren't prepared to speed up to that level then stay in the grandma lane and stop making me wear my brake pads out.
