I am planning a trip to Houston and I'm thinking of taking a day to just drive around and see the city. Is this a good idea or not?

hwy 290, I-10, hwy 288 and hwy 59 are all hell on traffic from 5:00 pm till 8:00 pm. i hate driving on weekday evenings.

Why don't you just look for yourself? Traffic in real time. Check in during different times of the day and see how things are going. Of course this shows freeways only.
288 usually eases up before 8pm but it's getting that bad. Also, 59 north/east is not as bad as 59 south/west - and it's been worse. Right now 290 and I-10 west (Katy Freeway) are probably the worst, with 45 in either direction not too far behind.
9-11am and 2-4pm are usually not too bad, unless there's bad weather or something else out of the ordinary. If I have my way about it and I have to leave town, I do it during these times (if not overnight). Also, Sunday is a good choice for just driving around to explore. May not be as much to do (especially downtown) but it's generally the lightest traffic day.

I would say rush hour is 6:45 a.m. - 8:30 (the worst being 7 a.m. - 8 a.m.) and then again 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 (the worst being 4:45 p.m. - 6: 00)

Learn the city streets they have save me 30 minutes of travel time instead of looking like a duck on one of the major freeways in the morning and afternoons I am the shortcut king in Houston . Every Freeway parallels a major street get a map and you will see.

I think this is more real than other posts, atleast for US 59. But I would say, 6:30-9:00 is the morning peak. That what I found in transtar.
