It is very difficult to cancel your policy before renewal and get your premium back. First of all the insurance agency you buy your TWIA through will tell you that Texas Windstorm Insurance Association would prefer to deal directly with the agent instead of the customer. As long as I am paying a $1700 annual premium a year nobody has the right to tell me who they are going to be dealing with. If I deal directly with the insurance agent then TWIA will need to deal directly with me. I cancelled everything with my agent at Allstate because he wanted to over insure my house than more than what it was worth, so my premiums were pretty high (more cents on a dollar for him). Anyway, he wasn't really helpful after that. TWIA contacted him instead of me to let him know what documents I needed to cancel the policy. After a couple of weeks I called the agent because I never received a refund from TWIA, so I contacted TWIA directly and was told the agent told them I wanted the policy cancelled, but he never followed up with me to let me know there was a document I need to submit to them. Anyway, TWIA wanted me to mail them my original policy. Why is it we can cancel our auto and home insurance policy with just a letter, but TWIA either needs the policy back or a copy of a letter from the agent claiming a lost a policy and that I already have TWIA, so I have two TWIA policies. It seems this agency operating as a private insurance company doesn't want to give you your money back. You have to jump through hoops.
