We would like to start our 5 years old daughter on Cello. Could anyone recommend a good cello teacher please?

Can I ask why Cello? Just to find a proper size cello for a 5 years old is a headache already. You might wanted to consider Violin to start with? Youknow something she could carrying around? As for the teacher its depend on your location. Please check at The Juilliard School’s Private Teacher Directory.

It's rather unusual to start a child on cello lessons at such a young age. Check with the UH music department or the Houston Symphony for referrals from professionals. Also, there should be some Suzuki Method teachers in Houston.

A five year old on Cello?!??!??!

She's going to have to stand upright and it's going to look like she's paying a mini bass violin.

Suzuki Academy in Champions. SAMUSICHOUSTON.COM

Excellent instruction for serious students who come from all over the Houston metro area to study here. It is a combination of Suzuki and traditional conservatory methods so students work on technique, solfege, etc. in addition to Suzuki repertoire.

I also recommend Gold Violin Shop, Philip Gold luthier, for a small cello. His shop is located on Mapleridge in Bellaire.

5 year olds start cello at Parker Elementary, using the Suzuki method. The little cellos are extremely cute. Personally I'm not convinced it makes much difference if you start at 5, 6 or 7 since the 6 and 7 year olds catch up very quickly to where the kids are who started younger. Progress is slow for the really little guys.

Well, I disagree somewhat. Yes older kids will catch up quickly with the playing while the little ones spend far more time on proper position and basic pieces, but the central tenet of the Suzuki method is developing an ear for pitch. Just like a foreign language, the earlier you start the better. It's less pushing young children to play before they're ready, which is what most people think, and more about listening to pieces played well over and over again and trying to recreate that sound with your instrument.

My young son (4-5) spent almost a year taking Suzuki violin lessons before even getting a violin. During that time he listened every day to the music he would eventually play, while learning notes and rhythm. In 4th grade now, he is first violin with his high school orchestra and received a first at State. He was not a serious player and still isn't, I haven't heard him practice for 6 months now, but I do think that for him it is simply another language he is fluent in.
