I was wondering what the work environment for engineers is like at Shell Oil in Houston. Are there opportunities to move around, or stay as desired? Is safety taken seriously? Are there flexible hours for mechanical engineers? Are the employees generally happy? I am inquiring for a family member and will have more information soon.

Half my friends are engineers at oil companies. In general safety is taken fairly safely. Good luck on the flexible hours. Most my friends seem to enjoy their jobs. There are opportunities to move around. Especially, overseas. I have friends in Russia, Dubai, Nigeria. I have a buddy in Sakhalin Island and he loves it. Which I am kind of surprised. All expenses paid and double pay for three years. When you work for an oil company if you want to move up you should live abroad for a few years.

He means safety is taken extremely seriously. (Same goes for the EPC companies who have customers such as Shell, etc.) Shell is especially safety-conscious and they have a good record unlike BP. I used to work for the SOPUS line a decade ago, not as an engineer, but the safety aspect was true back then. I also worked inside a Shell plant for 4 yrs.

You'll deal with regular drug/alcohol tests as an office worker who works on a computer all day. In the plants/field if you cross a hard barricade, enter a restricted area without a permit, don't tie off your harness, or do anything remotely stupid you'll lose your job immediately. You can get written up for not wearing safety glasses, ear plugs or not use a handrail if you climb up vessel towers. It sounds uptight, but it's actually pretty hard to lose your job. Safety is the most important thing.

There are a million things that can go wrong at plants. They have strict rules for everything. Accidents still happen.

I work in this field and I agree that safety is the most important thing to many of the big Exploration and Production companies. As a matter of fact it is so serious that all work will be immediately stopped if something is noticed to be unsafe or not up to standard. We have had many a well stopped or drills turned off due to an employee recognizing a possible safety violation. Everyone in the companies bonus depends on our safety numbers, almost as much as it depends on your personal performance.
And yes, accidents do still happen. Fatal ones at that.

Doesn't affect the answer. Shell take safety really seriously. Try walking down stairs in their offices without holding the handrail and you'll get reprimanded on the spot.
I don't work for Shell but they have investment in my company and we have to abide by their rules and regulations.

My husband used to work for Shell, and I remember when those handrail regulations came out. Then everyone was afraid they would get the flu from touching too many surfaces.
