Don't go for any of the promotions companies offer either. They like to make it sound like you are getting free stuff but you end up paying more in the long run in most cases. In almost every promotion (like the Reliant one with the free Nest thermostat) the rates are higher, so you end up paying for the thermostat and then some. Same with the TXU free nights or other similar ideas.

A Green Mountain guy was hawking at the Louetta H.E.B. I was surprised that he told me if I signed with him, Star Tex would not make me pay a cancelation fee.

Wonder how many people believe him? Curiosity compelled me to call StarTex, who said they certainly would charge a fee.

Y'all be careful.

The only way to get out of a cancellation fee is if you move. For homeowners, that's a pretty drastic step.

I just renewed with Champion for 24 months at 6.9 cents so 10.5 seems a little crazy.

When you add in delivery charges, it comes out to 10.9 cents:

Zhang Fei, so 10.5 with reliant is better than champion.

10.9 cents is for 24 months. You should get a lower quote for 12 months. Reach Energy has 8.5 cents for 2000 KWh.

And unless you actually use 2000+ kwh, it is even higher. My usage is always between 500-1000kwh (highest ever has been 1100) so I look for the best rates at those usage levels. I know people that have been excited to get a low rate only to find out they were being charged a higher rate because they weren't using enough electricity to meet the amount for that low rate.

What's the cheapest for less than 1000KWh for 12 months plan. I'm looking at powertochose.org but it would help if somebody has done the research.

That's where www.mytruecost.com is useful. It factors in penalty for low usage, etc. If you have your acct number, they can actually plug in your real data and give you the best rate. I don't think reliant is part of that website, but pretty much all the others are there.
