I will be moving to Houston soon and am trying to decide between an apartment in WestU or one in Upper Kirby. Costs are similar, and from my brief visit to Houston I liked both areas. I'll be working downtown. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to test commute times to downtown from either area during rush hour. I slightly prefer the WestU apartment, but if the commute is significantly longer I might go with Upper Kirby...

Can anyone help me out?

I live in West U and work in Upper Kirby. I have to go downtown for work occasionally during rush hour. The commute times are about the same, maybe five minutes difference. The bulk of the traffic on 59 in the morning stacks up between Shepherd and downtown so you will hit it either place you live. If there is a wreck on 59 or if you like a more scenic drive, you can always go into downtown through River Oaks on Allen Parkway or Memorial from either West U or Upper Kirby. Either commute is going to be 20 minutes or so door to door. I'd pick the apartment you like the best. You are in great areas of town in both places.

I used to live in West U. I would not live in that area if I worked downtown. I would live in a midtown apartment over Upper Kirby or West U/Rice village. Midtown is right next to downtown. I would also look at Heights and Montrose apartments.

I work downtown and used to live in the Gables West Ave. I now live in Southside Place. The commute from West Ave was slightly better, but the difference in commute time isn't significant enough to play a factor in choosing between those two areas. Personally, I would not live in midtown unless you wanted to try to occasionally bike or walk to work.

Neither is a bad commute - just pick the area you like best and you'll be fine.

Out of those options, I would go with Upper Kirby. However, I would also look into Midtown and Rice Village.

Like others have said, the difference in commute between both areas is pretty negligible, and Allen Parkway is a viable alternate route if the traffic on Hwy 59 is bad.

Upper Kirby's advantage is that it has its own nightlife scene and plenty of restaurants. West U is more residential and would be quieter if that's what you prefer, though the proximity to Rice Village makes it a good choice as well for nightlife and restaurants.

I would check out 2121 Amli on Allen Parkway or something.

If you live in Upper Kirby or West U why would you get on the freeway? To the OP, take the back streets. You can take W Alabama into midtown, or you can go down san felipe and then down Gray. 20 minutes? I live close to Westheimer and fountain view and it takes me 20 minutes when I drive in. It should take you no more than 10, 15 minutes top.
