Suggestions? I live in SW Houston, so preferably somewhere around there. I'm new to the area and my 9 year old chocolate lab has been scratching a lot. He's an indoor dog and always healthy, but I went to visit my gf's family and brought my dog and I'm pretty sure some of the dogs he interacted with there, had fleas, and gave them to him.

If you're anywhere near Beechnut and Wilcrest, go to Dr Maxson at Beechcrest Animal Clinic. I was a dog trainer for 25+ years here in Houston and went to vets all over the city -- but, when I found Dr Maxson, I stopped looking. He's the best, in knowledge, caring and pricing. Everyone to whom I've recommended him agrees.

You need to treat for Fleas and also tapeworms. Both of those are OTC. Labs are also notorious for allergies so it could also be just allergies or flea allergy dermatitis. Sorry I don't ha e a Vet recommendation but you don't necessarily need one, either.

All pet owners need a Vet for fleas? That is like saying you need a Doctor for a cold. Some people believe that I guess......

Thanks, calling him and seeing how soon he has a time available. If he's really backed up we may need to find somewhere sooner.

They need a vet for regular vaccinations and when there are issues. My dog is 9 years old and has been ridiculously healthy his whole life. I move too much to get too comfortable with one.

Getting in at Beechcrest today. Thank You.

Does anyone have any suggestions for local boarders if I was to have him boarded to go away for a weekend or something? I want to see what vaccinations they require before taking him in today so he could get those as well.

I"ve used them for my bulldog:

Circle Lake Ranch
Office: (281) 395-4311
Fax: (281) 395-4569
Email: info@circlelakeranch.com
Address: 1134 Farm to Market 1463 Katy, TX 77494

This place is great, very clean, the staff is attentive and they have plenty of place to run around. I think it's $32 a night.

They require a fresh bordetella vaccine (less than 6 months) and the canine influenza shot.

Having a dog sitter come in to your house 2-3-4 times a day is easier on a dog (especially an older dog) than being boarded -- and you dont need to get vaccinations for in-home pet sitting. Beechcrest Animal Clinic has business cards for two such sitters, both of whom are bonded and one of whom they recommended very highly.
