Back to OP: no this is not a Houston phenomenon. It happens everywhere. I guess STUPID is spread evenly.
Good luck getting people to agree on "what is stupid"

My car never gets break into
In few words, I grew up in one of the most dangerous cities in the World where people get killed to take their shoes.
So no, I never ever leave my doors unlocked.

I lock my doors all the time. But if a couple kids running low on meth are looking for pawnable stuff they will smash your windows if they see something or not. Had this happen to me in River Oaks.

That would not fly in our neighborhhood, because the HOA nazis would be sending her a letter! It is against our restrictions to leave your garage door open unless you are actively working in the garage, driveway or yard. It may just take someone stripping her garage of goodies to see the error of her ways.

We've had the midnight "break ins" in our neighborhood, and yes, it is usually because people leave things out in view or leave the car unlocked. I say they deserve it. I have a garage that I use 99.9% of the time for it's true purpose, and all of my cars are locked up if they are for some reason NOT in the garage.

FWIW, I left mine open one night, probably just forgot to hit the garage opener button or something was in the way. The sheriff knocked on my door at 2:00AM to let me know the door was up. I was embarassed, so now I am in the habit of making sure it is closed every night before we go to bed!

I had my truck broken into a few weeks ago at the Westside Omni parking lot. I didn't have anything in plain view. They popped the lock which didn't work, so they just broke the driver's side window, opened up the center console, and took an old GPS that had a passcode. I thought it was strange why they picked my car since there were so many other vehicle choices, but my car was well hidden from anyone passing by thanks to a large van parked next to it.

It amazes me how many people will fill their garage with trash and garage sale crap, and leave their 40K car in the driveway...makes no sense.

Once I was going to Kroger on 2920 and pulled into the second spot on a row close to the front. Then a lady in a black BMW pulled in next to me. Don't know the model but it was the little 4 door one. Looked new ish.

She immediately got out, whipped out her phone and started making a call. I get out of my car and glance at hers and what do you know....BIG black purse on the front passenger seat. Not tint whatsoever on this car either. I was smh.

I flagged her down before she got in the store and she looked annoyed with me for interrupting her call but said a half assed thanks

*itch I should have just let you get robbed. It was like she was meaning to leave it. Well don't carry a carry on sized purse and then think it's too heavy to bring in for a few bottles of wine
