I have a question and I hope this hasn't been already answered, if so, sorry.
The community of Alief in Houston, Texas...Is it anything like the Crenshaw District in Los Angeles, California?
Also, where does one go for cultural festivals similar to the "Taste of Soul" held in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles, Ca. last Saturday?
Peace Out!

Is that the setting for grand torino? If so, no. Its mexican vietnamese around here. There maybe gangs but i dont see them. Lots of small old houses with small yards on the southside and a few new subd with bigger houses on the northside. A while ago people from NOLA was a huge issue but i think they moved back already.
They got chinese vietnamese mexican festivals but nothing big. Korean food is ok maybe 4-6 options. Houston does have annual japanese and korean festivals held in a park in the medical district

Gran Torino was set in Detroit.

Alief is almost equal parts Black, Hispanic, and Asian. I'm not familiar with Taste of Soul, but Houston doesn't have just one major district or drag where black culture and retail is concentrated. It's mostly spread across the city in different neighborhoods.

Well I've worked in Alief (taught for 6 years) and I'm pretty familiar with South LA and the Crenshaw District. Alief is not similar. Crenshaw has history and cultural significance. Similar areas of Houston would be southside inside the loop. They do have similar festivals and restaurants and community. Similar areas of LA to Alief would be parts of Carson, Harbor City, Wilmington on the south side or parts of Sylmar, Pacoima in the valley... Minus the ocean breezes and mountain backdrops.

Alief was a farming area that boomed very quickly in the 60's-70's and then had one of the worst hits from the oil bust of the 80's. Metro bus service along with shady developers east of Alief (google the Sharpstown scandal) left an area of blight. There are some decent areas in Alief and some good neighborhoods, but overall there is a feel of Houston annexing a community, letting it slide into gross and investing tax revenue in other parts of town. I've always thought that if Alief had been its own city it may not have been a Katy or a Sugar Land but it wouldn't be as bad off as it is.

Thanks TTT! I don't think I'd like living in Alief very much. I'm going to check out Stafford, I've noticed several job opportunities there in my area of expertise.

Peace Out!
