We are PLANNING on making the move from MD sometime in Feb 08 and have narrowed our location to Missouri city or SugarLand area because of good schools .
I was curious to see if anyone/families from the MD/DC/VA area have made the move and WHY?
We are hoping to sig reduce our cost of living and save MORE. Happy Holidays!

Hi Wanna, I am currently living in MD but will be moving back to TX in early 2008. I love it there! The only reason I'm here is that I worked for Enron and I couldn't find a job in the state and had to move.

I will be moving back to Kemah or surrounding area. I'm not looking to work in downtown Houston anymore. Too much traffic for me.

TX and MD are alike in the environment. So your surroundings will be familiar to you. But it is SO MUCH cheaper to live there! Really inexpensive. The quality of life is so much better there then MD. MD gouges you on everything. Nothing is cheap or free here.

TX housing is very, very reasonable. The property taxes are high but if you look around, you could find an area that has lower property taxes. No state tax. The food prices are about the same but TX has year round farmers markets so if you go that route, it is cheaper.

There are no harsh or cold winters. The winters are like the Carolinas. Very mild.

There is plenty to do in TX. I live in Annapolis right now and there is NOTHING to do unless you drive to Baltimore which is a 45 min drive for me.

There are tons and tons of very nice restaurants in TX and very inexpensive. Where as Annapolis, it is either high prices restaurants or McDonalds. Nothing in between.

I am hoping to work in the Pasadena area which is heavily industrial so that I don't have to commute to Houston.

If you like living by the water, check out Kemah, Seabrook, or League City area. The school district, Clear Lake is very good too.

Good luck! You'll love it!

I'm friends with a couple that got relocated from DC to The Woodlands. Some tranfer specialist agent for Exxon got ahold of them. They lasted about two years there then moved into the city, West University area. While they liked the safe schools and clean, newish developments compared to DC, it got way too quiet for them. Also, the husband found he had given up one bad commute for another.
As to the schools, I think you will find your kids are ahead of ours. Remember an "Exemplary" school doesn't always mean its a great education, it just means they studied (and I mean fully focused on it) and passed a standardized test.

We are leaving Maryland for the Houston suburbs around March 2008. We are considering Spring, The Woodlands,Sugar Land, and Katy as possibilities. When you say that about the kids, do you mean the kids in Texas are doing better academically or Maryland kids? That is one of my concerns, since I have two kids ages 8 and 10--I need to know if they will be on track or if I will need to teach them some things at home to prepare them for the schools in Texas (I used to be a schoolteacher). Also: I would love to hear other people's opinions about the areas that they moved to, good and bad, and why you feel that way (it'd help us all).
Thanks!

I was saying their children from the DC/VA school system were ahead of Texas.
