And Of course rivalries change. When you add new teams to the league, it creates new rivalries.
Yeah interstate rivalries are some of the fiercest but mostly in college. I can understand the fiercest rivalry from the Raiders/Chargers and Bengals/Browns because they play in the same division. I can understand the Giants and Dodgers in baseball. I can understand Mavs/Rockets and especially Mavs/Spurs for basketball. Same with Pens/Penguins for hockey. But there isn't a rivalry between the Eagles/Steelers and some Steeler fans say as much.

How big of a rival really is Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, do you hate the Eagles?

Same with the Ravens-Redskins (from the Ravens side)
Ravens, Redskins close in distance, but far from being rivals - tribunedigital-baltimoresun

(from the Skins side)
Redskins, Ravens Indifferent to So-Called Rivalry | NBC4 Washington

The hatred of any so called rivalry between the Cowboys/Texans mostly comes from the Texans side. But if you ask most Cowboy fans, they will tell you their main rivalries are the teams I mentioned before. Heck just go to the Dallas forum and ask them. Rockets and Mavs? Yeah. Astros and Rangers? Perhaps. Cowboys and Texans? Nah. You're right that rivalries do change. But the Texans will never be as big as Cowboys/Redskins or Cowboys/Eagles. They have played a grand total of 4 regular season games. None of those with championship aspirations. None of those with playoff implications. Just another regular season game against an inter-conference team.

Trying to create rivalries between teams from Houston and Dallas is like trying to get Pandas to mate, its slow awkward and you can't tell if they even notice each other.

I have to assume that MLB is trying to create a rivalry between the Astros and the Rangers that is why they realigned the Stros into the American league West, however like the two Pandas at the zoo its slow moving and awkward...however it may gel in the next few years if both teams remain competitive.

It seems maybe Rice vs SMU may be the only rivalry that's mutually desired by both parties and that is of course collegiate.

The civic rivalry is real like it or not but sports rivalries not so much...

BTW: Texans fan here......

Jack Lance, how do you know so much about panda mating?

I didn't know UH and SMU are a rivalry. It certainly doesn't feel like a rivalry. White shoe upper income SMU vs working man commuter university UH?

More Cowboys fans than Texans fans in Houston? No.

More Cowboys fans in Houston than Texans fans in Dallas? Absoltely so. Outside Houston itself and the surrounding counties, the Cowboys are far more popular throughout the state and nation.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/10/twitter-map-nfl-fans

I friend of mine went to a bar on Washington to watch the Cowboys and Giants. There were probably 80 people there. Of those, I would wager about 20 were Cowboys fans. The other 60 were Texans fans screaming loudly for the Giants.

As a die hard Cowboys fan, Im cool with the Texans winning so long as they arent play the Cowboys. I dont really pay that much attention to them since they arent in our division.

I do remember times, particularly when Bud Adams was pulling his most obnoxious antics, when it seemed there were more Cowboys fans than Oilers fans.

Since the Texans came on the scene, it's been all about them. At this point, within the Houston area itself, I'm not sure if the Cowboys or Saints are the second most popular team. And I'm surprised at how often I see Steelers logos - they were the Oilers' greatest rivals.

I agree that once you leave the Houston MSA, the Cowboys dominate in terms of fandom in Texas.

Cowboys are a much better team, and always have been. Facts (including a surprise at the quarterback position):

Playoff Record (all-time) : 34-26 (Last appearance after 2014 season)
Super Bowls Won: 5 out of 8 appearances
Championships Won: 5
Passing Leader (all-time): Tony Romo - 33,626 yards
Rushing Leader (all-time): Emmitt Smith - 17,162 yards
Receiving Leader (all-time): Michael Irvin - 11,904 yards
Winningest Coach (all-time): Tom Landry - 250 wins

The Texans have not had a decent quarterback in years, and cannot contend without one.

Do you live in Houston and do you consider yourself a Houstonian ? If so do you think the Cowboys success makes DFW a better place than Houston ?

No, but it does make the Cowboys the type of franchise that the Texans simply cannot be.

But if you're a sports fanatic, you will find Dallas better in that category. Sports are a bigger part of the culture in Dallas.
