Hi all,
I'm trying to do my due diligence prior to actually moving in and research electricity company providers. I'm purchasing a new 5k sqf house with a gas cooktop. What can I expect in terms of usage? I work from home and the thermostat is seldom set below 75 (I get cold if set below that).

In the 1100 sqf apartment I'm living in now, last month I used 1100kwh (electric stove and we cook 6days a week). I'm trying to determine if that figure is realistic in a considering it will be a much bigger space but also more efficient AC unit (2x 16 seer units).

So is that number realistic? I've seen some folks post similar numbers here but what I dont know is how big is the space, lifestyle, etc..

Thanks!

In my 2200 sq foot house with 2acs. My family of 4 used about 1000kwh

My parents live in a 4000+ home uses easily 2 to 3x my amount. Only 2 people mind you.

That being said since you're buying such a large home, the year build matters a lot.

In the summer with the thermostats set on 77/78 and 79 on the first and second floors, respectively, we use roughly 1500 kwh per month in a 4200 sq ft home. If you keep your entire home at 75, I would imagine you'd be in the 2500-3000 kwh range.

We live in a 2 year old home, so our AC units are fairly efficient.

1100 kwh seems high for an 1100 sq ft apartment. Older building? Are you on the top floor?

My brother and I both have older, not-particularly-efficient homes. We both work during the day and only run the A/C in the evenings (programmable thermostats, set at ~78 in the evening and ~83 during the day). In my 2800 sq ft house I used 1200 kwh last month, in my bro's 2200 sq ft house he used 750 kwh. Newer homes with double-paned windows and better insulation would do better.

Thanks all. Yes, it is an older building with an older AC unit. And I'm on the middle floor. Why so much? keep in mind that I work from home and we cook alot too with our electric stove (family of 4). I'm guessing with those two factors are the reason those numbers are where they are... but I have no baseline to base that off with.

Holy hell batman LOL

I'm in a small home (1295 sq. ft) and I used 385 kwh according to last month's bill. I have TXU. My stove is electric, dryer is electric/gas. My actual charge for electricity was about $25, but with all the fees and add ons (not using enough electricity fee, TDU fee, tax etc it came up to $65.00.

I"m forcing myself to at least get to 500 kwh this month to see how my bill will look. Since i'm being penalized for trying to save electricity, I might as well use it up and use the fee charges towards actual electricity usage

Oh and my home was built in 2010 and it's a 1 story with double paned windows. I have a 2 story home on each side of me, and my front door faces south (so the sun hits the side of the home to my left in the am, and the home to my right in the pm.

edited to add: oh yeah family of 4, I can see how your apt. can get up to 1100kwh.

edited to add pt. 2: I just checked my kwh usage on the txu website and i'm at 388kwh and I have 13 days to go in my billing cycle so I think i'll make it to 500 (so far my cost charge is showing $63.24)

OP, will your heater be electric or natural gas? Keep in mind that if it's electric, your highest kwh usage will be in the coldest months .
